Clothing to Keep Your Dog Warm

Wrapping your dog up in something warm when the weather gets colder may be an issue you haven’t given much thought to. After all, animals come with their own cold weather apparel, right?

Yes and no. Some dogs tolerate cold weather better than others, and some should wear a covering to help them keep warm. For example, the fur on some dogs is not as dense as others.

In addition, some types of dogs are not genetically suited to colder weather. They evolved in warmer climates. As a result, these types of dogs would be just as cold as you when they go out in winter.

In general, smaller dogs or naturally thin dogs and dogs with short or thin coats probably need a sweater when going outside in cold weather. They may even be more comfortable wearing a sweater inside the house during a cold day. Even breeds such as poodles, if their fur is close-cropped, may need a sweater for outdoors.

Other dogs that may need sweaters include older dogs who have weaker immune systems or dogs that have health conditions that affect growth of fur, such as Cushing’s disease or hypothyroidism.

On the other hand, bigger dogs that have thicker fur don’t need to wear any type of covering. In fact, they would be too warm if covered in something when they go outside in cold weather.

Their coats are naturally designed to protect them from the cold. Examples of these types of dogs include Siberian Huskies, Malamutes, and Saint Bernards. Chihuahuas and Greyhounds, however, will need to cover up.

If you are getting a sweater for your dog, think about the material. Wool is naturally good for cold weather. But it can lead to itching for some dogs just as it does for people. For this reason, a wool-cotton blend may be better.

The other thing to keep in mind is the fit. It is a good idea to measure your dog’s neck, chest and waist before buying so you can get a good fit. This way you don’t have to worry about the dog pulling the thing off, or having it drag on the ground or catching on something. The covering should be snug but not tight. The clothing should only extend to the dog’s waist.

Also, check for other parts to the clothing, items such as tags, buttons, hooks or zippers. Good dog clothing won’t have anything that can easily be chewed off.

Dogs love being outside, no matter the weather, and when you board your dog here at Barney’s Ranch he’ll be able to enjoy our 4,000-square-foot outdoor dog run for as long as he likes.
